In October 2004 the KEDKE took a major initiative to develop a coherent long-term strategy for the development of the Information Society in the field of local government.
This decision was based on the progressive realization of the extended possibilities offered to the local communities and municipalities by the technologies of information, by the modern communications and, of course, by the Internet. In order for the scientific substantiation of the strategy and to formulate and support a plan of implementation for the initiatives, KEDKE collaborated for many years with the research team «Technological, Economic and Strategic Analysis of the Information Society– INFOSTRAG» the Laboratory of Industrial and Energy Economics with the development company “INFORMATION TRAINING LOCAL DEVELOPMENT” (PETA) SA. Thus, a framework of strategic cooperation was formed by KEDKE with the municipalities and the local Authorities in the Information Society.
In four areas of activity with the presence of government can contribute the efficient and effective use of information technologies and modern communications:
1. In the service of the citizens and businesses operating in the area of responsibility of each municipality to provide the in real time a wide range of necessary and useful online services. Thus, decreases time and improves the quality of the transactions with the municipality.
2. To improve the internal functions of the municipalities, for the better use of their resources and tools available, promoting partnerships with other municipalities and organizations in Greece and abroad and enhancing the quality of decisions of municipal institutions, with the increased opportunities afforded to information, documentation and communication.
3. Facilitating the participation of citizens in decisions that affect them and the development of public consultation procedures with the social organizations and groups of citizens at local and regional level.
4. By promoting local development through investments in the modern electronic and network infrastructure, digital content and training for the use of IT and the Internet. Thus, facilitates the recruitment, support, maintenance and business interface in the region, while supporting the inclusion of small and micro enterprises in the manufacturing and financial chain, with multiple benefits for the local economy “.
